Scarecrow Festival

Producing a popular annual event, the Historic Village collaborates with the Center of Contemporary Arts in Abilene and area school districts for this family-friendly festival. Students from first to 12th grades make scarecrows, following the theme-of-the-year, which are displayed at the Village before moving downtown to the arts center. The first Saturday of the display is free for the public to attend at the Village, with all the fall-festival rituals – lawn games, face painting, arts and crafts, food vendors, and music.

The 2023 theme was “famous artists.”  Previous years have seen famous cartoons, authors, and superheroes. Plan on coming next September and encouraging our home-grown future Picassos and Monets!

Christmas Tea

Our first Christmas Tea, hosted in the Rode Arts Gallery in 2023, featuring Sue Wood, the “English Tea Gramma,” was an instant success.

West Texas settlers often tried to hold on to their traditions of a “formal tea” – especially around the holidays – even though their new surroundings weren’t Victorian. Guests were able to sip a variety of teas and enjoy all the delicacies served at high tea while learning about the age-old custom.

Look for this to be a repeat event in 2024!
